Low-Fat, Low-Cal or Low-Carb: Which is the Right Diet Food?

Choosing the right food to eat is usually a gray area for those who want to lose some weight. The different dieting systems, like South Beach, Momentum Fitness, and Atkins, bring about a split in opinions as to the right kinds of food to eat. Some recommend low-carbs, others rely on lean protein while a good many consider low-calorie as the ultimate food for weight loss. The question that remains is: which really is it?

Health experts describe the right kind of food as quality food. Quality food contains loaded amounts of fiber that make you feel full faster. Low-fat, low-sugar foods as well as unprocessed foods also join in the elite mix of quality foods. How often you eat quality food also comes into play in your weight loss process. It is recommended that you eat least six small meals a day. These meals must contain meat for your protein needs, and fruits and vegetables for your daily dose of vitamins and minerals. You can also compute the amount of calories you need per day. If you’re happy with your weight, the amount of calories you can take daily is 15 calories multiplied by your weight in pounds (15 cal x weight in lbs). If you’re figure-conscious and feel like you need to obliterate a few pounds into nothingness, the multiplying factor becomes 12 cal; that is, your daily calorie intake is 12 cal x weight in lbs. Having an estimate of your calorie intake enables you to plan your meals and be mindful of overeating. If you do give in and overeat occasionally, you should keep in mind to burn off the extra calories in your daily workout. It is also good practice to monitor your body fat levels with your calorie intake.

While low-something diets promise you quick results, these results tend to be short-lived. The important thing is to incorporate a balanced diet, centered on quality food, to your lifestyle. Getting the right amount of nutrition from each of the food groups— proteins, carbohydrates, fats —  leads to a longer-lasting and healthy way of losing weight.
